tobes.33 Subtle, yes. but definitely not quiet. This is the sound of quality noise. Building in waves it flows over; taking you on a sonorous and unpredictable journey. The kind of journey that can leave you tired, wondering where you’ve been and where you’ve ended up. But without doubt its a journey that leaves you yearning for more. And richer for taking it.

Kudos The Rothko Chappel. A fine, fine trip of drone, gaze and sonic goodness you’ve delivered.

about

The Rothko Chapel was established in 2012. It is an ongoing collaborative guitar noise project helmed by Pete Dowd (Singlecoil) and Charles Sage (Hessien, y0t0), incorporating multiple participants. It is open source, loud and without boundary.

The project released its first track on UK label Tessellate Recordings’ 2013 ‘Earthtones’, contributed a track to Hibernate Recordings’ ‘Dayalu’ in 2015 (a fundraiser for the British Red Cross in Nepal’s efforts after the earthquake of that year), and also contributed to the 2013 Borderline Listening Post installation in Lyttleton, New Zealand to mark the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

‘Segmented’ represents a series of mini projects; several years of intermittent file swapping culminating in deep chasms of prolonged calm, spacious interludes and occasional flurries of enthusiastic commotion. The album unites nine compositions created in disparate locations from 2012 - 2014, including contributions from six collaborators that The Rothko Chapel hold in the very highest regard: Noveller, Steve Kilbey, Tape Loop Orchestra, Maps and Diagrams, elintseeker and Tree Of Man.

‘Segmented’ captures the establishment of The Rothko Chapel’s working relationship, its collision of ideas, sonic aesthetic and indication of future direction - peaceful swells of melodic texture, unrelenting walls of hypnotic drone to squalling barrages of abrasive noise. With diverse participation and abstracted aural interlacing, it allows ample room for contemplation, reflection and interpretation – an art piece, with teeth.
